The Talking Bands are accumulations of crocheted ribbons, each was created by women from a variety of cultural backgrounds—yet all connected through a shared, tactile activity.

Over the course of a year, these women—friends, acquaintances, and companions—were invited into my home and asked to crochet a Schneckenband (snail ribbon). While I provided a basic introduction to the technique, each woman was free to choose her own colors and rhythm.

As the women crocheted and the ribbons grew, conversations unfolded in many languages—sometimes overlapping, sometimes simply shared in silence. The bands began to carry more than just color and texture; they held traces of stories, laughter, and quiet moments of connection. In time, they formed a kind of soft Tower of Babel—not of confusion, but of coexistence, where many voices and threads came together in harmony through the act of making.
